Fish and chips remains one of the nation's favourite meals, but in a time when everyone is a 'foodie' can this traditional meal cope with a high end make over? We visited a Cirencester chip shop which serves some of the fanciest fish suppers we've ever seen to find out.

A number of venues across the county have received awards for their food, and after being named one of the best chippys in the UK at the end of 2019, Malt & Anchor was definitely one we had to investigate.

The venue is located in Cirencester on Castle Street and as soon as you walk through the door, it's clear that this isn't like most other chippys, for a start it has a separate drinks menu which includes a £200 bottle of Dom Perignon as an option.

The decor feels very modern and includes a number of nautical elements - including various different shades of blue - in a nod to their namesake.

There is a seating area so that diners can enjoy their chips in house with extra seating upstairs in the main restaurant. However, you can have them to takeaway and you can even pre-order your food.

Despite it being the middle of the week, there were still a number of people sat at tables digging into their meals and with winter well and truly still in the air, the warmth of the restaurant was much needed.

The menu includes posh versions of chip shop favourites - the pickled eggs are quails eggs, pickled in champagne and there aren't many fryers where you can get a classic bouilabaisse as a starter or a fishcake made from smoked salmon.

No bottles of pop can be seen on display behind the counter, instead diners can choose from cocktails including the Anchor Fizz, made from vodka, elderflower cordial, lime juice and Prosecco, a very fancy upgrade on the traditional can of Shandy Bass. And there can't be many chippys serving Chateauneuf-du-Pape alongside King Prawn Tacos and Panko Coated Calamari.

Alongside your classic ketchup, mushy pea and curry sauce side options there's garlic aioli and sweet chilli sauce - oh and the first time we've ever seen ham hock and leek mushy peas too.

Takeaway orders are made at the till where there is a vast menu which features all the traditional options - including a range of pies, with everything from wild boar and chorizo to vegan options.

All of the Malt & Anchor's fish is sustainably caught - the cod and the haddock are all cooked to order, with an option to upgrade to a fancier beer batter for an extra 50p per portion.

Not being a massive fan of fish, my go-to at the chippy is a battered sausage and chips which came to £5.50.

The menu offers meal options so that you don't have to have chips if you don't want to - which is great if you just want to share with someone.

After having placed my order I was told that the food is cooked fresh to order and could take around six minutes, so I took a seat on the plush leather bench near to the till to wait for my food.

True to what I had been told, the food did arrive around six or seven minutes later in a small cardboard box and it smelt amazing. The sausages come from local butchers Jesse Smith's and are made from locally sourced meat.

My order came with a side of gravy which, although it wouldn't have been my first choice, was one of the best things about the meal.

I couldn't tell you the last time I had a chippy and although this portion of chips was smaller than those that I've had in the past, it was just the right size for me as normally I struggle to finish it.

For £5.50 I think this is well worth it - and a lot better than a number of other mainstream takeaways out there.

This unique little restaurant is the kind of place you would bring your family for a sit-down fish and chips without the fuss of a posh restaurant.
