Woodworkers to display handmade crafts this weekend

Matthew Straughn-Morse of Port Townsend uses a drill to start a hole for a screw on the top of a handmade secretary desk. Straughn-Morse will be one of several exhibitors this weekend at the Port Townsend Woodworkers Show, which will be held Saturday and Sunday at the American Legion Hall, 209 Monroe St. (Brian McLean/Peninsula Daily News) PORT TOWNSEND — From his two-story workshop, Matthew Straughn-Morse softly used a small hammer to remove the main piece from a secretary desk made of black walnut. He was down to the small details Tuesday morning, drilling small holes in the top and showing a metal mechanism inside the desk that allows a drawer to sit on a foundation which protrudes as the drawer is pulled out. Straughn-Morse, 37, a former instructor at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking at Fort Worden, will be one of several exhibitors this weekend at the Port Townsend Woodworkers Show. The two-day event will be at the American Legion Hall, 209 Monroe St. The show will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Carvers, instrument makers, sculptors and furniture makers also will have pieces to show, event organizer Tim L...

RFID Breaks Speed Records for Tolling Solution – 2019-05-14 – Page 1

Technology companies Kathrein Solutions and Tönnjes have completed a test of Tönnjes’ IDePLATE and IDeSTIX tags with Kathrein’s reader and software platform, and have captured tag reads at speeds of more than 220 kilometers per hour. They did so for an audience of existing and prospective customers, in order to illustrate how effective the latest iteration of their technology is. The companies also demonstrated a new tag designed for motorcycle headlamps. Kathrein Solutions is a German Internet of Things (IoT) company that provides RAIN RFID solutions. Tönnjes makes vehicle-identification solutions, including its IDePLATE license plates with integrated RFID tags, and its IDeStix adhesive tags that can be applied directly to a vehicle’s windshield. While the companies are providing their passive UHF RFID-based technology for a handful of government agencies, they wanted to demonstrate what the system was capable of, so they scheduled a test at Germany’s Sachsenring racetrack, in the city of Chemnitz, and invited potential customers. Approximately 90 guests from 30 countries watched the testing take place. The testing consisted of heavy trucks, cars and mot...

The Chipmunk, I’ve always assumed, is very much a British aircraft, indeed the image of a Chipmunk was as British to me as the thought of a Spitfire doing a victory roll over the Kentish countryside in the summer of 1940. So, I was surprised to find that, in fact, the Chipmunk was both designed and first flown by de Havilland in Canada. Apparently, at the end of World War II de Havilland in the UK was keen to develop a new low-wing trainer to replace its aging Tiger Moth but was too busy developing new jet aircraft so the task was handed to the Canadian operation. Accordingly, the Chipmunk first flew in Canada in May 1946 and was in service later that year. Mind you, whilst production started overseas, the majority of Chipmunks (over 1000) were actually produced under licence in de Havilland’s UK factories for the RAF and other air forces. The Chipmunk has always been a favourite R/C model and has been widely available to us in many forms and sizes over the years, from plans to ARTFs. The attractive look combined with generally great flying characteristics have made it a very popular model, not least because Chipmunks are usually well-mannered and behave like a low wing sports m...

The difference between wire feedthroughs and bulkhead connectors

This site is operated by a business or businesses owned by Informa PLC and all copyright resides with them. Informa PLC’s registered office is 5 Howick Place, London SW1P 1WG. Registered in England and Wales. Number 8860726. Engineers who need to pass power and signal wires through the walls of pressure and vacuum chambers usually reach for off-the-shelf sealed bulkhead connectors. Such connectors often seem like the best or only way to traverse chamber walls, but they can unnecessarily constrain designs, raise costs, and trigger electrical problems. Wire feedthroughs hermetically sealed with epoxy can be a better alternative. Such feedthroughs pass all the conductors in a wire harness though the chamber wall with no loss of pressure or vacuum. Often, they permit design flexibility that’s not possible with off-the-shelf connectors. They also improve electrical performance by eliminating voltage drop and contact-resistance issues that affect connectors. And although they are custom products, hermetically sealed wire feedthroughs have a lower installed cost than comparable bulkhead connectors when specced into the right application. It’s important to stress that point ab...

Xbox announces exclusive XO19 controller and apparel

Designed by the London-based DPM Studio, the new Xbox One pad is kitted out with a white, grey, black and green camouflage aesthetic. DPM, the studio behind the design, has used their camouflage expertise from designing Hardy Blechman’s London based streetwear label, maharishi, and transformed their craft into a gorgeous controller. The design follows an Aquabrush print: a custom camouflage that was made exclusively for X019. Aquabrush is inspired by the traditional 1950’s lizard-brushstroke camouflage and the River Thames in London. The design brings together the origins of artistry in camouflage design and the celebration of the rich culture of the U.K., subtly integrating iconic landmarks in London and a section of the River Thames with the hallmark maharishi dragon. The controller will only have 1000 units created so those who wish to pick up the device, either in person at the event or online, will have to act fast. Microsoft has said that the DPM controller is their most limited-run controller yet. Those who wish to purchase the Aquabrush controller will be able to purchase the device in November 14th at 2pm PST/10pm BST. The storepage will go live directly after the newes...

Evonik agrees 3 billion euro sale of acrylic sheet unit to Advent

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – German chemicals group Evonik has agreed the key terms of a 3 billion euro ($3.4 billion) sale of its methacrylates plastics unit to buyout group Advent a year after its decision to shed the business. Evonik’s supervisory board has yet to sign off on the sale of the manufacturer of clear acrylic sheet and precursor materials, but the purchase agreement is being put together, the German group said in a brief statement on Monday. Advent had vied for the business with rival bidders SK Capital and a consortium of Triton and Rhone Capital, as well as petrochemicals group Ineos, people close to the matter told Reuters last week. The company announced plans in March 2018 to sell the business, looking to focus on faster-growing sectors, such as feed additives and rubber silica for tires. The Evonik unit competes with Arkema’s Altuglas unit in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) – or clear acrylic sheet – and MMA, a precursor material for PMMA, glues and paints. PMMA is used in the construction, automotive and electronics industries and known by brand names such as Plexiglas. Advertising Display Pvc Sign Board Evonik, which is due to report 2018 results...

A performing bear has mauled its handler during a show in northern Russia, as animal rights

A performing bear has mauled its handler during a show in northern Russia, as animal rights activists step up their campaign to ban traveling circuses that use trained animals in the country. Audience members filmed dramatic scenes Wednesday of the brown bear slamming its trainer to the ground and an assistant kicking it in an attempt to rescue his colleague. The animal was wearing a lead around its neck and attacked the man after it had pushed a wheelbarrow across a stage surrounded by onlookers. The circus said neither the bear nor its trainer were seriously injured, but authorities in the republic of Karelia have launched an investigation into the incident. The bear attack follows a series of recent animal-cruelty controversies involving traveling circuses, including an Italian troupe’s cross-country trek that some Russian residents sought to ban. Activists, who accuse traveling circuses of abusing animals by beating them to teach them to obey commands and keeping them in cramped cages, plan to stage animal-rights events over the next two weeks in dozens of Russian cities. Russia’s law on responsible animal handling bans petting zoos and keeping wild animals in apartments, bu...
